Happy New Year 2011!
This is a copy of the letter recently sent to our growing data base (over160) -
If you don't like cats, please consider making a donation, as our main goal is population control through TNR (trap neuter/spay-release) of feral cats, and low-cost spay/neuter with rabies vaccinations for ALL cats. If you don't care either way, please consider a donation as the cat explosion IS a public health and environmental issue. If you DO care about cats, then read on...
It has been almost two years since Tehama County had its first public meeting to address the issue of the over-abundance of cats county-wide. This meeting inspired us to organize "Friends of Felines," (FOF) under the financial conservatorship of Second Chance Pet Rescue. It was apparent that there were already other individuals who were doing TNR, and this was a great opportunity to network, and pool resources. Additionally, we were a part of the County’s Feral Cat "ad hoc" committee, which has supported "Friends of Felines."
Since the Spring of 2009 Friends of Felines has helped to Spay/Neuter and give rabies vaccines to over 200 cats!!! Many, which might not have been altered due to cost and/or lack of motivation. That's potentially TENS of THOUSANDS of cats that will not be around this spring to suffer a hard life, spread disease, and impact the environment!
Along with organizing spay/neuter clinics and lending humane traps, we have offered spay/neuter help and information to ALL who asked. From Berry Creek to Paskenta, Willows to Paynes Creek, Red Bluff, and beyond. The CATastrophe is everywhere, and almost everywhere there are people who care. For more news and info, please check out our "blogs" via www.second-chance-pets.org/friends-of-felines Also, a general information pamphlet can be downloaded at www.second-chance-pets.org/feralcats/fofpamphlet.pdf
If you wants to volunteer to translate it into Spanish, please let me know.
We will continue with our low-cost spay/neuter clinics. At present, we don't have funds to subsidize a full clinic, so we are offering the increased, but still low cost of $30/$45 for Male/Female altering, with FOF subsidizing the cost of a rabies shot. We hope our first official fundraiser, "The Fur Bowl," will raise enough money to push the price back down a bit.
For those of you who bowl, please consider joining a team or becoming a "team captain," or if you don't bowl, please consider a sponsorship, or making a raffle/prize donation or send a donation with the enclosed envelope, or to Paypal via www.second-chance-pets.org. Also, consider dropping by to be a part of our videography, sharing photos, cat comments, and short stories, at our Feb 6th fundraiser, The FUR BOWL, from 2-5pm at Java Lanes, Corning.
To book a team, or make a raffle/sponsorship donation, contact Sharon via email or, phone 824-9100. All donations are 501-3c tax-deductible.
If you still have cats that need to be spayed/neutered, check the http://www.second-chance-pets.org/friends-of-feline blog for trapping and other info, and call 824-9100 or email cats@mishafarms.us for appointments.
It has been an overwhelming task to enter all the intakes into our new database for this mailing. Thinking about the many people who are feeding 10, 20, 60, or more cats with none being altered. The frustration of hearing that they were not willing to use some of the food money for spay/neuter. Recalling that time and time again, I had to tell people there are no resources in the North State to find homes, medical care, a 2-12 week wait for a feline shelter space that ends with an almost certain death sentence for feral cats. Remembering all your stories, and knowing that many of you are on fixed or decreased incomes, some losing your homes, many dealing with the cat desertions from those who lost their homes, I'm almost embarrassed to ask for help. But, it's a fresh new year, with hopes of "A Wonderful Life" moment, and hope that you can be a part of it in some way!!! Pease feel free to post, and circulate the accompanying flyer, and find us at The Corning FUR BOWL on Facebook.
Best wishes,
Sharon Novak, for Friends of Felines
PS Since up until this mailing, about 99% of our donations have gone directly to subsidize our clinics. We probably will not be doing an additional mailing for a year or so. So, if you are not in a position to donate now, please keep this letter and the return envelope on the fridge, or in your donations folder for when you may be in a position to donate later.?

Well, as kitten showers start area wide, the phone was ringing off the hook this morning with "cat calls."
One elderly lady told me that last month's population control was her son coming out and shooting 8 cats, and he would do so again if things didn't change. My yummy oatmeal started churning in my stomach..... Over 22 cats and none fixed!!!
With money for 2-4 more clinics, I worry about the future .........
People, PLEASE!
There are few to zero homes for these kits that turn into reproduction machines in as little as 5 months!
Feed + NO Fix = energy for MORE CATS!
Feed LESS (use money for FIX) = Less Cats and Better Conditions!
Donate today to help control and decrease our cat over-population with surgery not slaughter!!!
