Music for Mutts 2010
By Pat
A slight breeze and the shade of the trees at Northside Park made our 3rd annual Music for Mutts, Bark in the Park, the fun, toe-tapping, prize-winning place to be Saturday, June 26. It was a treat to hear Mac & The Boogie Boys play their cowboy style of acoustic music. Thanks to Lenny Barbo, who plays a mean fiddle, for getting Mac and the Boys together for our event. Next, the fabulous Blackketter Brothers Band played with their brand of rock, oldies, blues and original songs. We were treated to a violin solo by Paul Blackketter, who surprised his wonderful wife Diana, one of our faithful regular dog socializers, with his playing on this instrument. Both bands donated their time for our event and Second Chance is grateful for their commitment to the many dogs waiting for new homes. We were delighted to see many of the dogs we had adopted out show up with their guardians to help support Music for Mutts. Weaver, a dog who came to our shelter during a bad storm in 2008, who had a badly broken back leg which was subsequently amputated, came from 55 miles away, with Gretchen, his guardian. Weaver looked great and amazed the crowd with how well he got around. The other highlight dog of the day was Truly, now Pearly, who was the original Music for Mutts dog 3 years ago. She was brought to the shelter just 3 days before our 1st Music for Mutts, after someone called and reported a starving abused dog. During Trulys' time with us, she almost died 3 times while recovering from her truly horrible prior existence. Sylvia Clark adopted her about a year ago. Truly/Pearly was another hit of the day after everyone heard her story and saw the original pictures of her poor abused body. So many people were supportive of Music for Mutts, especially Kara, 8 years old, who with her Mom, Dad and Uncle Paul of the Blackketter Brothers Band, made a real lemonade stand and sold drinks and snacks. And, Kelly and Taylor, regular shelter volunteers, who came with a giant table full of home baked goodies. We couldn’t have done any of this without the support of the volunteer crew who took care of the raffle tickets, T-shirts and donation jar. Thank you Debbie and Michelle for your continued support at our events. And, of course, the board members of Second Chance and shelter volunteers who spent the last 5 months planning and promoting this event. Second Chance Pet Rescue would like to thank the Major Sponsors of our event who donated $100 or more and the raffle prize donators who donated some fabulous prizes. We want to encourage everyone to support their businesses.
