Olive Festival Fun
In late August our community celebrates its major export, olives, with a parade and a fun day at Woodson Park with vendors, food and fun. And we were there for it all!
We partnered up with US Bank who decorated their ‘racing bed’ (used for the popular bed races after the parade) to look like a train. Thanks to Skylar, our treasurer and US Bank manager; we had a top notch float for the Friday evening parade.
We choose Tabby, a 5 month old Blue Stafforshire mix for the rider on the float. Her calm personality and wonderful temperament made her perfect for the noise, kids, and confusion of the day. We dressed her up with 3 airy tutus, a pair of green glittery wings, and a green straw hat! She was the perfect olive fairy and she LOVED it! Tabby got so many comments, pats and pets, ooohsss and aaawwws, it was almost too much for us humans! Lots of clapping for us from the crowd lining the parade route made the hot evening all worth it!
Saturday, we shared a booth with US Bank (thank you again Skylar), and set up our all our ‘stuff’. T-shirts, book of adoptable dogs, newsletters, business cards and the popular eye-catching, disturbing, infuriating, and sad Wall of Chains.
Kelly, Taylor and Mari Ann did a wonderful job of interacting and informing the people who stopped by about Second Chance Pet Rescue and what we do. The Wall of Chains, or as we call it the ‘Wall of Shame’ made 2 people actually cry after Kelly explained some of the chains and showed which dogs came in with them on. The Wall of Chains did what it was supposed to do, shock people and bring to light how some dogs are really treated.
The day at the park ended with a new awareness for a lot of people about dogs in our community and the role Second Chance Pet Rescue plays in their care at the Corning Animal Shelter.
